ReplyDeleteThe process Stan uses to create his really cool Avant Garde movies is very interesting. They were made by painting directly on the 16-millimeter film strip one frame at a time, and their shifts in perspective keep the viewer on edge. Because each frame takes only one twenty-fourth of a second, Stan often chose to repeat each one two, three, or four times in the printing, resulting in between 6 and 12 images per second. At this speed, each painting is visible just long enough to be perceived in some detail but not long enough to become a static picture. The resulting tension between stills and implied movement is only one of the many ways Stan sets the viewer off balance. I think it is a legit form of movie making because even if the images are only shown for portions of a second it is still a collection of moving images, which is what someone would define as a movie. This is really cool and different! I have never heard of anything like this but now I know and I'm fascinated.
yes it is because a movie cant be just one slide and he made a lot of slides soi would call his way a good way
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion a movie tells a story but I also agree with you
DeleteBurns Period 3
ReplyDeleteThe process he uses is very unique. I think it is very interesting and it is a creative way to create a movie that will intrigue viewers. It is a legitimate form of movie making because there are many different images shown in the film that make a collective moving picture that continues for a considerable amount of time.
I think that its a cool and creative process that he uses. It is original and different. Personally, I am not a fan. To me it just is too fast paced and the images are just a bunch of different colors. Because of this, I don't think its a way of making a movie. Movies are clear and understandable and have an easy to follow story.
ReplyDeleteI think that this form of filmmaking may not be super interesting to most of the general public and can be too fast for some, but if one were to think more abstractly, these short films could have many different perspectives and a world of stories. I can relate to having an easy to understand movie and I see why they're popular, sometimes I just want to give my brain something to think a little more about while watching something. Because of this I will have to respectfully disagree.
DeleteSomer Mock, period 5.
ReplyDeleteI think his way of going about making an abstract film is very unique and interesting. I like it because even though you do not know what is in the pictures they still intrigue you by the pretty colors and shapes you can make out of them. The process seems super time consuming and looks like it needs a lot of focus. Yes i do think it is a legitimate form of film making because even though the pictures are abstract and only shown for a quick second, it is still a collaboration of different photographs put together in action.

ReplyDeleteI think the process Stand uses to create Avant Garde movies are really different and unique from all the other different styles of making movies. They are intriguing precisely because of their unusual nature of having only multiple static pictures flash across the screen per second. I think in some ways it is a legitimate form of moving making because it requires a lot of the same effort to make as well as has continual flowing still images just as movies originally started off as being, just in a different form.

ReplyDeleteI think that the method that he uses to create film is very unique and different. It is a process that could spark intrest in viewers. I think that this is a legitimate form of film making because even though it's just a series of photos they are all shown together for just a split second which creates a moving picture.
Lawson, Period 8
ReplyDeleteI think how he made films was really different, which made it cool. It was cool how the movies he makes are really just images and it's cool to try figure out what it really is.
I agree with you it's very unique but cool
DeleteWhat do you think about the process Stan uses to create Avant Garde movies?
ReplyDeletei think that the process is really smart and also creative. it caught my attention and probably caught attention of a lot of others.
Is it a legitimate form of movie making? Why or Why not?
i think that this is a form of film making because the end result is a movie, even if it is a little bit different.
This type of film making is very different than that of mainstream Hollywood which makes it unique, personal, and more meaningful in my opinion. I think it is a legitimate form of movie making because he really puts his heart into it. His unique feelings about life and death are expressed through his films which is what art is supposed to be.

- Yes, I do think it is a legitimate form of film making because even though the pictures are abstract and only shown for a quick second, it is still a collaboration of different photographs put together in action. Plus, they can creating as much emotion within a person as any film could.
What do you think about the process Stan uses to create Avant Garde movies?
ReplyDeleteThe process he uses to create these movies are interesting to me, because he can make very long films or very short films. The content in his films are all very similar, yet each photograph or film has different meanings.
Is it a legitimate form of movie making? Why or Why not?
Yes, it is a legitimate form of movie-making because Stan's work is widely known and is an inspiration for photography students and film-makers. Unlike some movies, his are professional and create meaning through his art.

ReplyDeleteThe process Stan uses to create Avant Garde movies is cool, because he can take similar looking photos and make them into a very interesting, and different form of movie.
I think Stan's form of movie making is a form of movie making. I think it is legitimate because I think making movies doesn't have to fit a certain form.
@RobinA I agree will you on how it is very creative, and grabs your attention very easily.
@AnnaLawson I agree with you on how the way he makes films is very interesting and cool.
I think Stan's way of going about making an abstract film is very unique and interesting. I like it because even though you don't get to see very many details of the picture or make out what is in the picture you can see interesting shapes and colors. I think not knowing what the pictures are of and making out shapes with what you see makes the movies that much more interesting because you don't quite know what you're looking at. The movie and picture process seems super time consuming and looks like it needs a lot of focus along with patience. Yes I do think it is a legitimate form of film making because even though the pictures are abstract and only shown for a quick second, it is still a collaboration of different photographs put together in action.

ReplyDeleteIs it a legitimate form of movie making? Why or Why not?
I think Stan's process in creating Avant Garde movies is spectacular, interesting, and extremely unique. I like how he doesn't try to keep the focus of the photographs but he uses his photographs to create interesting shapes and designs. By doing so I think he makes his movies really interesting and unique. I believe that his way of making movies is a legitimate way because there is not set way in making movies. I believe that making movies is just another way of expressing yourself and art can be anything we want it to be.
What do you think about the process Stan uses to create Avant Garde movies?
ReplyDeleteIs it a legitimate form of movie making? Why or Why not?
-- I think that Stan's process of film making is super cool, because he uses a different kind of process than other film makers would use. and I just think that is really interesting. He uses pictures to tell a story with the different photographs that he takes. It might seem that when he takes his photographs that he doesn't try and that he is just taking a regular snapshot without any of parts of the creative process considered. However, he does this process on purpose to let others create another meaning to his photographs than the intended one. That is really interesting to me.

I think Stan's process of film making is extremely interesting. He paints directly on to each film strip which creates an abstract look. What he does is unique. I think this is a legitimate form of film making because the end result still has moving pictures and it is still a form of art.
ReplyDeleteThe process that he uses to create Avant Garde movies is very intregging. I think it is a good form of movie making because even if the images are only shown for portions of a second it is still a collection of creative images.
ReplyDeleteI truly enjoy this form of art. It is very interesting and it is cool on the eye. It makes you think about sounds and other senses that could go with the sight. Like the entire time I was going through those, I was thinking about songs that would match the tone of the movie. It may be weird to have an entire movie like that, but a music video, or a part in a movie when you're trying to add suspense, those images would work very well in.
ReplyDeleteThe process that he uses is very unique. It is time consuming and very delicate. Each image was painted on a 16 millimeter film strip one frame at a time. I think it is interesting because you cant see the images long enough to tell what they are which lets you decide. I think it is a form of art because he enjoys it and it is interesting to watch or look at.

ReplyDeleteWhat do you think about the process Stan uses to create Avant Garde movies?
I think it is really cool how he creates these pictures and turns them into a movie. I think it is interesting how unique each photo is and it makes the movie fun to watch because you can't tell what the photos are of.
Is it a legitimate form of movie making? Why or Why not?
I think it is a legitimate form of film making because even though the pictures are abstract and are only shown for a quick second, it is still a collection of different photographs put together in a movie. I like abstract photography, so I think it is a much more interesting way of making a movie than the typical way.

ReplyDelete- The process is very unique by using the film strips and burning them or painting them to get the different effects.
Is it a legitimate form of movie making? Why or Why not?
- It is a very interesting way of movie making. It is a form of movie making because its like stop motion movie making.
What do you think about the process Stan uses to create Avant Garde movies?
ReplyDeleteI think its very interesting and from most art today. As its total unrecognizable from anything else and every time its going to be different. A whole new look on movie making as well as art.
Is it a legitimate form of movie making? Why or Why not?
Yes as movie making is a form of art to entertain the viewer and this movie form checks out. By making the video of just photos and odd colors and shapes open to interpretation and keeps the viewer interested in it.
What do you think about the process Stan uses to create Avant Garde movies?
ReplyDelete-I love the uniqueness and individuality of it. I think it's really cool that someone could take a paintbrush to a film strip and make something really interesting that didn't look like blobs of color but looked more like patterns and shapes. I like how he then took the pictures and put them into a film, but made them almost like flashes of light because if you looked at one picture for too long, I think people would try too hard to try and comprehend them.
Is it a legitimate form of movie making? Why or Why not?
-Yes i think it is. Movies are supposed to make viewers think about things, and i think this definitely served that purpose.
What do you think about the process Stan uses to create Avant Garde movies?
ReplyDeleteThe process that goes along with creating these movies is very creative. It looks like the pictures were painted rather then burned or holes cut through them. In my opinion, this is a really creative way to express your own artistic thoughts. I really try to figure out what the images are.
Is it a legitimate form of movie making? Why or Why not?
I think it is, it really draws the viewers in and makes you want to keep watching them. I think the whole idea was to make viewers very interested.

I think this a legitimate form of movie making because he can get the shots very quickly and it is efficient.
What do you think about the process Stan uses to create Avant Garde movies? I thought that what he did aaas very different and creative. The way he burned some of the film strips was very creative it gave a different look for each abstract look he was going for.
ReplyDeleteIs it a legitimate form of movie making? Why or Why not?
Yes, the was he conducted it and how he created his abstract photos was very cool and then he would make those into videos and those made the video unique in his name very different.
What do you think about the process Stan uses to create Avant Garde movies?
ReplyDeleteI believe its extremely creative. The way he alters the film gives it that unique look.
Is it a legitimate form of movie making? Why or Why not?

ReplyDeleteWhat do you think about the process Stan uses to create Avant Garde movies?
I love the process that Stan uses to create his movies. The process is extremely creative and unique. Who would think to paint the film strips or burn them, then have them be played? The detail that really makes this stand out is the fact that the film strips are played through once more in order to create another movie from them. This new method of using the film strips is completely unique. The method is almost unheard of since painting the film strips is associated to their end of being played.
Is it a legitimate form of film making?
I believe that this is a legitimate form of film making. It's similar to if an animator was asked to draw a psychedelic scene, but this one is made in real life without any animations. This is a new and inventive method of movie making, even though it is not used for a big production movie.
That's a good way to put this form of film making as: "a real life psychedelic scene". I think that's a good way to think of this project when taking pictures and making a scene of art to come alive.

I believe it is a legitimate form of film making because it takes time and effort to create a piece of art he is proud of.
I agree with you that this process is really unique and intriguing. I think it's hard for a lot of people to get to a place of creativity that it takes to make Avant Garde movies because it's almost an abstract form of film making and is very interperitive.

ReplyDeleteWhat do you think about the process Stan uses to create Avant Garde movies?
The process to make these films seems innovative, somewhat abstract. Because it hasn't really been done before it seems complicated and unusual to me.
Is it a legitimate form of movie making? Why or Why not?
I think this a legitimate form of movie making, it's just not what most people would consider a "movie". But because there is a story line, a plot, and a purpose for these films I think it is a form of movie making.
What do you think about the process Stan uses to create Avant Garde movies?
ReplyDeleteIt's an interesting process to make such unique way to show art.
Is it a legitimate form of movie making? Why or Why not?
I don't think it is because it doesn't tell a story

ReplyDeleteI think that Stans process to create movies is very creative and interesting, especially how he burned the film for his movies.

I think it's legitimate because he has everything a movie requires, it just isn't the typical thing that comes to mind when someone says the word movie.
What do you think about the process Stan uses to create Avant Garde movies?
ReplyDeleteThe process Stan uses to create his Avant Garde movies involves thorough research and time staking small portrait making.
Is it a legitimate form of movie making? Why or Why not?
If it is a legitimate form of movie making depends on the audience that perceives it, but also how they feel about art.

Is it a legitimate form of movie making? Why or Why not?
I think that it is a legitimate way of movie making because the audience is still interested and it can help convey a message like a movie does.
What do you think about the process Stan uses to create Avant Garde movies?
ReplyDeleteI think its a really cool way to make film. It's unique and not an art many people posses the ability to create. I love how unique he gets to be with each movie especially considering the pictures are so close up there is no speculating what he is trying to show.
Is it a legitimate form of movie making? Why or Why not?
Yes, I see this as legitimate film making because although you don't film a scene of acting, you are taking pictures of objects, placing them in a specific order, and speeding up the shutter so fast that it creates movement and a movie. This can be related to making a cartoon movie.
I think that's a good way of seeing it as a cartoon because sometimes cartoons don't even have characters that speaks so it's all images. For example Tom and Jerry.
DeleteWhat do you think about the process Stan uses to create Avant Garde movies?
ReplyDeleteIs it a legitimate form of movie making? Why or Why not? I think it's a unique way of making people see and feel emotions differently in a film. My personal opinion I think it can be a real for making a movie. That's because if a deaf person was watching it, they can start associating those colors to those specific sounds that they can make up. Davison P.4
I like your analogy of someone who may not be able to hear, because it's true. If someone is deaf, they can watch these movies and begin to understand things people can on a daily basis. This can be a form of education for certain people and it's beautiful.
DeleteSeverson - period 4
ReplyDeleteI love his process because of what it leads to. The films are so beautifully put together can convey so many emotions for people. I do not think it is moving making, but it is abstract film making at one of it's finest points. Movies tell stories in very blatant ways, but Brakhage's films tell stories in subliminal ways and are driven more by emotion and passion than anything else.
I can understand why you said that it isn't a legitimate form of movie making, it's true that his work is driven completely by passion and emotion, which can relate to traditional movie making as well, but it is portrayed in such a different way that it almost contradicts the movie making process.

ReplyDeleteWhat do you think about the process Stan uses to create Avant Garde movies?
- I think the process is truly amazing. I love the way he breaks things down to truly digest a different form of art. His work shows so many different perspectives that can make the audience think deeply of the messages.
Is it a legitimate form of movie making? Why or Why not?
- I believe it can be classified as a legitimate form of movie making because it still tells a story, just in a different light than regular traditional movies. His movies still tell stories beautifully, just like traditional movie making. I don't see why it can't be classified as a legitimate movie making film.
What do you think about the process Stan uses to create Avant Garde movies?
ReplyDeleteIt is a very interesting process. Each frame is like a different work of abstract art, put together to tell a story.
Is it a legitimate form of movie making? Why or Why not?
It is because he tells a story in a unique way. It is similar to stop motion in its frame-by-frame style.
What do you think about the process Stan uses to create Avant Garde movies?
ReplyDeleteIt seems like a somewhat tedious process, but when the movie is created, it's stunning. I think that it's cool that it's much more than just slapping a bunch of random photos together. When it's done, it's really just a story told with photographs.
Is it a legitimate form of movie making? Why or Why not?
I think it is because it tells a story, just without any words. The images can be interpreted in different ways, so I think it could be considered more of an open ended movie type.
I agree that the process looks tedious and that the product is stunning. I also agree that it's more of a story with little words and with very intriguing works of photography.
DeleteWolford
ReplyDeleteStan's process in making avant garde movies was very interesting and different. It's almost like stop motion but a lot more abstract. His movies take some imagination and open mindedness to watch. I think this is a ligitimate form of movie making. even though it may not make sense it's a form of art just like all other movies. It's simply a different and creative take on what a movie can be.
Peck - Period 2
ReplyDeleteI think that Stan's process of making these abstract types of movies are very interesting and unique. I think if they were more common, they would be a good contribution to the creativity in the movie making industry, since most movies nowadays tend to be painfully cliché. They are movies same as every other movie ever made because there's not much that conforms the art of film or art in general.
I think that Stan Breakage's way of making these movies is very intriguing and "out of the box". It shows a lot of creativity, and ca be interpreted in many different ways to different people. It requires more imagination on your part than a normal movie would I'm not sure if I would see it as a legitimate film making technique, but it is definitely unique and is still interesting to watch.
